Making Time for God as a New Mom
Before giving birth to my daughter, Shelby Grace, I would spend every
day for time with God. At night I would write in my prayer journal or prayer
diary. (Journaling was my form of prayer).
In the mornings I’d listen to sermons via YouTube and then listen to my
Christian CDs in the car on the way to work. Since the arrival of our new baby,
sleep has become a very valued commodity. As a result of the sleepless nights,
I haven’t been making time for God as I should.....My time with God does not
look like it did weeks ago.
So, Is It Possible for A New Mom To Make Time
for God?
While even the most excited new mommy can feel overwhelmed from round
the clock feedings and burping, diaper changes, soothing baby, bathing, and
recovering from labor, etc., I do believe it is possible to make time for
much-needed, wonderful, renewing time for God each day — while having a new
baby. In fact it’s IMPERATIVE to the life of the believer, and Jesus does tell
us,
With God all things are possible’
(Matthew 19:26)
(Matthew 19:26)
AND
For
nothing is impossible with God
(Luke 1:37)
(Luke 1:37)
After all, if one of my goals are to be an example of Christlikeness to
my daughter (and others) then how can I when I’m hardly spending any one-on-one
time with God? Not only that, but one day, she will need me to guide her
spiritually. As a first time mother, the hardest thing about motherhood for me
has been the constant choices. With every yes I make, I’m saying no to
something else. With this being said, it’s about priorities and making God the
number one priority in every area of our life. While what worked for me before
the birth of my daughter doesn’t work best for me today, I can still choose a
method that works best for me. Now I choose to make time for God every day,
even if it means choosing to spend my baby’s nap time reading the Bible instead
of scanning Facebook, Instagram, TV, email, Internet, phone calls, or texts. I
call them time-stealers. I now make time by reading the Bible while I’m
nursing, pray as I’m rocking my baby, or meditate on scripture when I’m up in
the middle of the night — and in all these things, there is GRACE.
No matter how busy we are, there’s no reason God has to take a backseat. But, God ordained this season of motherhood, and His grace is sufficient for me during this season.
